Spa Treatments

for Children

Why are children more prone to seasonal illnesses?

During the winter months, children are generally the first to contract illnesses such as flu, coughs, sore throats and colds.
Why is this? There are three main reasons.

For these reasons, the focus should be both on supporting and strengthening the immune system and on the wellbeing of the respiratory tract.

How thermal therapies work

The benefits of inhalation treatment for children

Prevents and treats respiratory diseases

Two types of spring water are particularly effective for treating and preventing sinusitis, tonsillitis, laryngitis and bronchitis, which are very common in children:

The treatment consists of aerosols, inhalations, nasal douches (i.e. water is used to flush out the nasal cavities), room sprays and humage.
Although Breta water does not act directly on the causes of allergy, it reduces inflammation and improves trophism in the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract.
It therefore alleviates the main symptoms such as sneezing, blocked nasal passages and watery rhinorrhea (runny nose).

Acts on the onset of rhinogenic deafness

The auditory system is closely linked to the respiratory system. In the early years of a child’s life, it is therefore particularly susceptible to infections, leading to cold-related illnesses that can turn into otitis.
This can cause ruptured eardrums or temporary deafness, known as rhinogenic deafness. The alarm bell is a drop in attention and performance at school: the child does not hear properly and therefore does not understand the teachers’ explanations and becomes distracted easily.
The spa treatment involves endotympanic insufflations (gases dissolved in the water are delivered directly to the middle ear to free it from mucus).
Again in this case, the most suitable water is Breta, rich in sulphur which helps unblock the ear and has an anti-inflammatory action.

Affiliation with the National Health Service

Inhalation spa treatments can be carried out in agreement with the National Health Service. A specific prescription from the attending paediatrician is required, describing the child’s disorder and the required treatment.
Each child has the right to one cycle of treatment per year, i.e. 12 days of treatment, with a total of 24 inhalation treatments or, in the case of rhinogenic deafness, 12 insufflations/politzer and 12 inhalation treatments.

Thermal therapy in children: questions and answers

What is the minimum recommended age?

Thermal inhalation treatments can be practiced from an early age. The procedures are natural and indicated for a still-growing organism such as that of children because they do not interfere with development, as sometimes occurs with drugs.

Basically, spa treatments can be carried out at any time of year. Our advice is to proceed during periods of mild temperatures (i.e. not in the middle of winter or the middle of summer) to prevent temperature fluctuations from compromising their effectiveness.
The best times are therefore
• from the beginning of September (before the start of schools and kindergartens) until the end of October for the prevention of airway infections (rhinitis, sinusitis, otitis, pharyngotonsillitis, bronchitis)
• from late spring to early summer for the treatment of residual symptoms (mild cough, runny nose), typical of the cold winter months and the first months of spring, and as a prevention prior to the hay fever season.

The treatment cycle lasts a total of 12 days, with one rest day halfway through. It is very useful to undergo two cycles a year, preferably in late spring and in August/September, before school starts (with three months between cycles).

To be effective, spa treatments must be carried out in the absence of acute symptoms. Otherwise, they can cause reactivity crises, such as bronchial spasms and asthma attacks.
At the admission medical consultation, the spa doctor will assess the suitability or postpone the start of treatment.
